In early 1996, Odyssey became one of the first
fifty childcare companies in the nation to offer
its parents the ability to view live streaming
video images of their child's classroom over
the Internet. System security is maintained by
Odyssey's control of parent user names and passwords.
Providing parents with such open access is indicative
of Odyssey's confidence in its teachers and its
program. Most firms in the Internet Video Monitoring
(IVM) industry offer childcare centers a no-cost
option in return for the exclusive right to market
their service to that center's parents. Under
such a system, costing the childcare center no
money whatsoever, and because viewing access
is limited only to persons who can walk into
a given room anyway, there is only one legitimate
reason why those centers don't offer this service
to their parents: they lack confidence that they
will provide the level of service promised to
their customers.
This service is a key component of Odyssey's
program because it transforms itself from a security
feature into a means of keeping parents in touch
with their child so they can better communicate
with one another at the end of each day.
